Portrait Painting Fundamentals

Painting a portrait is challenging, whether you’ve been painting for a while or are just starting out. In this class, we will break down the process of painting a portrait from start to finish.

We will start with basic information about drawing the head such as proportions, planes of the head, placement of the features, and general measurements. Then working from a photo reference, we will go step-by-step through the process.

We will work in layers starting with a monochrome underpainting, then moving to a first layer, second layer, and then finishing details. A demo will be given each week and students will work on their portraits with individual critiques and guidance from Robin.
